About Belmond Monasterio

Monasterio stands on Plazoleta Nazarenas in Cusco's historic centre, two blocks from the Plaza de Armas. The site became the San Antonio Abad Monastery in 1595, on the foundations of an Inca palace, and opened as a hotel in 1965. The hotel is a protected national monument. Its courtyards centre on a 300-year-old Andean cedar, which the hotel describes as the last of its kind in Cusco.

Dinner at El Tupay is international fine dining under stone arches, with live opera. Oqre serves Peruvian dishes with a modern twist in a courtyard framed by the cloisters, and Oqre Bar covers cocktails and small plates. Some rooms and suites have added oxygen, a practical help on a first night at 3,400 m. Cusco School paintings hang through the building, and the baroque chapel also hosts weddings.

Rooms are ready from 3pm and check-out is 11am. Transfers from the airport and the train stations are arranged through the hotel with an English-speaking guide and driver. Art tours, cooking classes and pisco lessons are listed as activities. A spa treatment suite and a massage room cover the wellness side, and small pets are accepted in a handful of rooms.

Perfect if you are

  • History and architecture
  • Acclimatising to altitude

Good to know

  • Only some rooms have supplemental oxygen, so ask for an oxygen room when planning if the altitude concerns you.
  • The spa and other facilities are for hotel guests only; the restaurants take outside diners when space allows.
  • The hotel's own pages give two different airport drive times, 20 and 25 minutes, so allow a little slack on arrival day.
