About Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel

Sumaq sits on Avenida Hermanos Ayar, the last hotel in Machu Picchu Pueblo before the road reaches the citadel, right on the Vilcanota River. The hotel's 2022 press kit describes a central block with reception, restaurant, café and bar, boutique and spa, flanked by two room wings that face either the river or the garden. A 2016 renovation added the terrace and the Imperial Suite.

Nearly all rooms are Sumaq Deluxe, in river or garden versions. Above them are two Junior Suites with private balconies and jacuzzis, and one Imperial Suite with its own living area, butler service and a wine selection from the owner's cellar. Garden rooms are quieter because they do not sit above the road. River rooms suit anyone who sleeps better to the sound of water.

Dinner at Qunuq can be the regular menu, or a six-course Apucc Mikhuna tasting menu built on native Andean ingredients and served with wine pairing on a private terrace. The Aqlla Spa offers treatments of 70 to 130 minutes. Families can book the Deluxe Family Room, which sleeps eight, and children can join mini-chef classes.

Good to know

  • Aguas Calientes can be reached only by train or on foot, and the hotel can have your luggage carried up from the station.
  • Ask for a garden room if road noise worries you, or a river room if you like the sound of water.
  • There is only one Deluxe Family Room, so ask early if you want a larger group in a single room.
