About Refugio Amazonas
Refugio Amazonas stands on a private reserve of more than 200 hectares of Brazil nut forest, in the buffer zone of Tambopata National Reserve. The journey is part of the stay. Guests leave Puerto Maldonado by road, continue by boat on the Tambopata River, then climb a staircase from the bank (its length changes with the season) and walk a short forest path to the lodge.
Each of the 32 rooms has one wall open to the forest, with mosquito nets over the beds and a ceiling fan. There is no air conditioning. Room types are Comfort (42.08 m2), Suite (52.12 m2) and the Deluxe Suite (84.80 m2), which has a private terrace with an outdoor tub and shower. The walls between rooms are thin, so you may hear your neighbors.
The lodge lists more than a dozen excursions, including the macaw clay lick, a canopy tower and night walks. It is also the base of Wired Amazon, a citizen science program guests can join. Families get a children's rainforest trail and a playground. Meals are buffets, and the lodge was named World's Leading Ecolodge 2025 at the World Travel Awards.
