About Casa Hacienda San José

Casa Hacienda San José stands in El Carmen, a district of Chincha, at Km 203 of the Panamericana Sur. The main house dates to the 17th century and began with the Jesuits. By the 1760s it had merged with the neighboring San Regis estate, and more than 1,000 enslaved people worked its sugar cane and cotton fields. Peru has listed the house as national cultural heritage since 1970, and the hotel presents it as a way into Afro-Peruvian history.

Rooms are modern, with interior views, views of the old house or views of the garden. The grounds hold a pool, a spa, wide green areas and Bar Don Tito, and the restaurant cooks in the criollo style of the Peruvian coast. Weekends bring family activities. Even if you do not sleep here, a 45-minute guided visit takes you through the galleries, catacombs, chapel and the room once used for punishment.

For a trip along the south coast, this is a half-day cultural break rather than a base for the classic circuit. Lima is about 2.5 hours north and Paracas is roughly an hour south, with Ica about 1.5 hours away. It suits travelers who want colonial architecture and the story of the sugar haciendas, and who can fit a night between Lima and Paracas.
