About Explora Valle Sagrado

Explora Valle Sagrado occupies a 32-hectare former corn estate near the village of Urquillos, at 2,900 meters, between Pisac and Ollantaytambo. José Cruz Ovalle is the architect, and the main lodge reads as a modern hacienda, with timber, tile roofs and verandas. Of the 50 rooms, 44 are standard rooms of about 40 m² and six are suites of about 53 m². Rooms look over the cornfields to the mountains, and each has a bath for soaking after a day out.

Guided explorations are the reason people choose this lodge. More than 40 are on offer, on foot, by bicycle or by vehicle, and the guides adjust each to your interests and fitness. Routes reach the Moray terraces, the Maras salt mines, Chinchero, Pisaq and Ollantaytambo. The lodge also works as a base for a Machu Picchu day, and we can plan how that fits your stay.

Meals, wine, drinks and the open bar are all part of the stay. Chef Virgilio Martínez of Central in Lima guides the menu, which draws on produce from the valley and the rest of Peru and evolves during a stay. The Pumacahua Bath House, a restored 17th century colonial manor a short walk from the lodge, has massage treatments, a sauna and a steam bath, and the garden has a large outdoor pool and two hot tubs.

Perfect if you are

  • Adventure
  • History and architecture
  • Acclimatising to altitude

Good to know

  • Rooms are ready from 13:00 and checkout is 10:00; for a morning exploration before an afternoon flight, you check out at 07:00 and staff mind your bags.
  • Programs run for a minimum of two nights, so this suits a proper base rather than a single overnight stop.
  • At 2,900 meters the lodge sits lower than Cusco at 3,400 meters, which makes it a gentler first stop for the altitude.
