About Heliconia Amazon River Lodge

Heliconia sits on the left bank of the Amazon, inside the Yanamono Communal Reserve, on a 40-hectare rainforest property. The lodge calls itself a limited-electricity lodge, so expect ceiling fans rather than air conditioning, and a rhythm set by the river and the forest. Rooms stand on stilts in Amazon style, with high ceilings, wide windows and private bathrooms with hot water, linked by covered, thatched walkways.

Days are organized around guided excursions: forest walks among very old trees, bird watching, searches for pink river dolphins and visits to local communities. Meals focus on regional Amazonian cooking, and the Lobby Bar covers the evenings. Between outings there is a garden pool, a hammock hut, a library and a play room for children, which suits families traveling with younger kids.

The journey is part of the stay. From Iquitos airport a land transfer leads to Bellavista Port, where the lodge's motorized boat heads downstream. The lodge suggests flights from Lima that land before 8:30 am and departures after 6 pm. Other schedules may need a separate boat departure, or a night in Iquitos before or after.
