About Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion

The lodge stands on a former cacao and rubber plantation. In the 1950s the land was Fundo Concepción, an Amazon medical mission run by the Catholic church. It now sits between the Madre de Dios River and the Tambopata National Reserve. The only way in is by canoe from Puerto Maldonado, 8 km downriver and about 25 minutes. Inkaterra staff meet arriving guests at the airport and arrange the road and river legs.

Most guests sleep in one of the 25 cabanas, raised on stilts. Each measures 45 m2, has a king bed or two twins and a mosquito net, and looks onto forest or the oxbow lake, called the cocha. The Casa Grande rooms are smaller at 19 m2 and sit under one thatched roof, which suits friends or families traveling together. Expect ceiling fans and limited electricity.

Days follow a program of guided excursions led by Inkaterra Explorer Guides in English or Spanish. They include Lake Sandoval, an oxbow lake with howler monkeys, caimans and giant river otters, the Canopy Walkway and a night walk in the forest. Meals are served in the Casa Grande: a buffet breakfast, then à la carte lunch and dinner, with a lounge upstairs.
